Garage sale begins 2007-'08 Up 'til Dawn campaign

Up 'til Dawn, a series of Northwest student fundraising activities benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., that raised more than $50,000 last year, is returning for 2007-'08.

The first event in this year's effort will be an Up 'til Dawn garage sale scheduled for 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Newman Catholic Center located at 606 College Avenue in Maryville.

Merchandise includes furniture, electronics, clothing, home accessories and other items.

Organized by members of the University's Greek-letter community and other student groups, Up 'til Dawn is part of a national philanthropy involving students at more than 150 colleges and universities.

The campaign consists of a variety of fundraising efforts held during the fall and spring, and culminates with all-night celebrations at each of the participating campuses. Organizers at Northwest have set this year's goal at $75,000.

Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude is a major health care center for children funded almost entirely through private donations.

Both a treatment center and research facility, the hospital is traditionally associated with the fight against pediatric cancer. In recent years, however, St. Jude scientists and physicians have also focused on genetic disorders and the development of a vaccine for pediatric AIDS.
