Photos like this one from the Nodaway Historical Society's collection will be
on display at the society's museum in Maryville from Sept. 19-Oct. 20. Local
residents with historical or contemporary photos of interest are urged to
submit them (see story below) so that copies can be used in the exhibit.

Dr. Mike Steiner, associate professor of history, will open a photography exhibit Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum titled "Images of Nodaway County: Our Photographic Heritage."

Steiner's presentation, "Photography in the Life of the Community," begins at 7 p.m. at the museum, which is located at First and Walnut streets in Maryville.

The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 20, will feature historical photographs of Nodaway County and its communities from the society's collection, as well as contemporary images from local amateur photographers, including children.

"Most of us are, of course, accustomed to looking at photographs, but we hope to get people thinking about what we have said over time about ourselves as a community through these images," Steiner said.

"This display will be an excellent way to measure our values through what we have selected to imprint in a visual record -- and, they're often just interesting and funny to look at as well."

Nodaway County residents are invited to contribute to the display in three ways:

To contribute prints, place submitted images in an envelope marked with your name, address and telephone and leave it at the museum desk, or call Steiner at 660.562-3616. Great care will be taken with all images, and originals will be returned promptly. Only copies will be used for the exhibit.

"Images of Nodaway County: Our Photographic Heritage" is made possible through funding from the Missouri Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
