Missouri Academy welcomes 'Vanguards' class

Northwest Missouri State University's Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing welcomed 88 new students to the highly selective residential school when classes resumed August 24.

The "Vanguards" class or class of 2009, comprising rising high school juniors, will join 40 returning seniors at the Missouri Academy, which was founded in 2000.

The entering class -- the largest in Missouri Academy history -- includes 12 students from Korea who represent the school's first international recruiting effort.

Students accepted into the Missouri Academy work to complete a demanding two-year series of college-level courses taught by University faculty during what would otherwise be their junior and senior years of high school. Those who graduate receive a secondary diploma and an associate of science degree from Northwest.

When recruiting, Missouri Academy Dean Cleo Samudzi said he and his staff seek to identify "highly talented and motivated high school students who will benefit from the opportunities we offer."

Samudzi described the selection process as "very competitive," and noted that the Missouri Academy carefully examines ACT, SAT or PLAN scores, 9^th- and 10^th-grade GPA’s, class rank, teacher evaluations, student essays, interest in science and mathematics and student and family commitment.

While attending the Missouri Academy, students live and work in a community of gifted peers and are encouraged to develop curiosity, creativity, self-discipline and independence of thought and action. In addition to providing rigorous academic challenges, the school seeks to instill good character and the desire to make a positive impact on society.

Those who graduate are prepared for continued success at virtually any institution of higher learning they choose to attend.
