Kevin Sharp
The Northwest chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority will present country music recording artist Kevin Sharp in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at the Performing Arts Center on campus. The evening also features opening act True North.
Proceeds from the show will help support Camp Quality Northwest Missouri, a summer camp for children with cancer. Tickets cost $7 and are available at the Hy-Vee supermarkets in Maryville and St. Joseph.
Sharp's debut album, "Measure of a Man," went platinum, and his hit singles, include "She’s Sure Taking It Well," "If You Love Somebody" and "Nobody Knows," which stayed atop "Billboard’s" country singles chart for four weeks.
A gifted high school athlete, Sharp was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma as a teenager and told he probably had only months to live. Then, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, he met music producer David Foster, who encouraged Sharp to fight his disease and pursue his musical ambitions.
In 1991, Sharp's cancer went into remission. Since then, in addition to finding stardom as a singer, he has become a motivational speaker and author. His advocacy on the behalf of cancer patients and survivors led to his receiving the Wishgranter of the Year Award. To date, he is the only Make-A-Wish recipient to become a wish request himself.
The story of his battle against cancer and subsequent survival and success has been featured on "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee," "Entertainment Tonight" and "Good Morning America."
