Following are Northwest’s Week 2 results (Feb. 3 through Feb. 9) for Recyclemania, a national collegiate waste-reduction contest comprising about 400 colleges and universities nationwide.
Grand Champion category: Northwest finished 22nd out of 79 competing schools with a 31.48 percent recycling rate, which is the weight of collected recyclables divided by the weight of collected trash plus the weight of collected recyclables and multiplied by 100.
Northwest’s rate means the University finished one place below Princeton University (31.6) and one place above the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (30.83).
Stephen K. Gaski Per Capita Classic category: Northwest finished 33rd out of 159 competing schools by posting a recycling average of 5.09 pounds per person. Bucknell University came in 32nd (5.10) and Elizabeth Town College was 34th (5.01).
Waste Minimization category: Northwest finished 44th out of 86 competing schools in this category, which measures overall waste reduction. Results are calculated by adding the volume of acceptable recyclables to the volume of trash then dividing that total by the campus population. Measurements can come from the entire campus or a smaller unit such as residence halls or the student union.
Northwest generated 16.17 pounds of waste per person and finished just behind the University of Pennsylvania (16.08) and one place above Rice University (16.24).
Gorilla Prize category: Northwest finished 68 out of 182 competing schools in this category, which records the total pounds of recyclables collected. The University weighed in at 30,880 pounds, which was one spot behind Connecticut College (31,046) and just above California State University-Long Beach (29,118).
Targeted Materials (paper) category: Northwest finished 15th out of 144 schools competing in this category by recycling 4.16 pounds of paper per person. The University finished behind Atlanta Christian College (4.2) and edged out Smith College (4.13).
Targeted Materials (cardboard) category: Northwest finished 86th out of 140 schools competing in this category by recycling 0.73 pounds of cardboard per person. The University’s cardboard collection rate left it in a virtual tie with the University of New Mexico and one place above Immaculata University (.68)
This is the fourth year Northwest has participated in Recyclemania, which is designed to motivate campus communities to increase recycling efforts while reducing overall waste streams. Weekly results and other contest information are available at www.recyclemania.org.
Northwest students, faculty and staff are urged to make a special effort over the next nine weeks to dispose of paper, corrugated cardboard and beverage bottles and cans in campus recycling receptacles, which are located in major campus facilities and all residence halls.
