Women’s tennis has strong showing
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s tennis team started off their season strong Saturday at the Washburn Invitational at Seaman High School in Topeka.
In the A flight, Alexis Bartek defeated Karsyn Betts in the semifinals but proceeded to fall to Jara Nicole of Emporia State by a slim margin of 8-9, making her the runner-up.
In the B flight, Stephanie Mannix and Gisela Font led the competition for the first round; Mannix defeating Jessica Koraleski of Rockhurst and Font taking down Alex Crowe of Emporia State. Continuing into the semifinals, they both fell - Mannix to Jodie Blackim of Washburn and Font to Christine Schatz of Rockhurst.
In the C flight, Emily Hoffman made it to the semi-finals but came up short four points to Kim DeGroot of Rockhurst at 4-8.
In doubles play, Bartek and Quesada took the title for the second year in a row at the Washburn Invitational by defeating Blackim and Casyn Buchman of Washburn 8-2.
The Bearcats will continue play Sept. 14 at the Truman Invitational in Kirksville, Mo.
