Northwest knocks off Nebraska-Kearney 6-3
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – Northwest Missouri State handed Nebraska-Kearney its first loss of the season with a 6-3 victory Friday afternoon in MIAA women’s tennis action.
The Bearcats won their second straight match to improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The Lopers fell to 7-1 in their first conference action of the season.
The Bearcats picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles as 22nd-ranked Alexis Bartek and Camila Quesada defeated Heather Connoly and Vanessa Gunawan, 8-4. Northwest continued to sweep doubles with identical 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Both teams battled in singles action, but it was Northwest picking up wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions to close out the match.
Bartek earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles while Gisela Font won 6-2, 6-2 over Connoly at No. 4 singles.
Stephanie Mannix was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Kelly Messbarger as Northwest claimed the 6-3 win.
Northwest returns home to open a stretch of five straight matches in Maryville. The Bearcats open the stretch against William Jewell March 13, before returning to conference play with Central Oklahoma March 14.
