Regional power NSU knocks off Northwest, 5-4
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – It was a rough start for the Northwest Missouri State women’s tennis squad as Northeastern State completed a comeback to take a 5-4 victory over the Bearcats Friday evening at the St. Joseph Tennis Club.
It was the Bearcats first match of the season as they are trying to rebound from a 13-13 record just a season ago. The Riverhawks, who entered the match as the No. 9 team in the South Central Region, improved to 6-1 as they will join the MIAA next season.
Northwest swept all three doubles matches as the duo of Camila Quesada and Alexis Bartek took an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles.
The next two doubles matches would not be as easy for the Bearcats as they finished off the Riverhakws 8-6 in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Heading into singles play the Riverhawks would dominate action completing the comeback for a 5-4 win.
Bartek took a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) win from Houda Bellamine at No. 2 singles, the Bearcats only win in singles action.
The Bearcats would not give in to the regional power easily however taking No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles down to the wire.
Camila Quesada fell to Ivana Belevoja 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Kim Ho dropped No. 4 singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to Sara Trott.
Northwest will have a week off before traveling to William Jewell, Feb. 29 as they continue non-conference action.
