Tennis opens season at Washburn Invite

TOPEKA, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State University men's and women's tennis teams traveled to their first tournament of the 2011-12 season hosted by Washburn with Rockhurst and Nebraska-Kearney.

Erika Leston defeated Kristin Weems of Nebraska-Kearney 6-1, 6-0, in the Women's A Consolation, and advanced to the final round where she defeated Karsyn Betts of Rockhurst 6-3, 6-4.

In the Women's A draw, Camilla Quesada advanced to the semi-finals and defeated Maureen Rielley of Rockhurst 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Quesada fell in the final round to Vanessa Gunawan 6-0, 6-2. Alexis Bartek advanced to the B draw finals where she fell to Casyn Buchman of Washburn 7-6, 4-6, 11,9. Leslee Feldhaus fell to Alex Schelble of Rockhurst 6-2, 6-1 in the final round of the C draw.

In the Men's A draw, Calvin Patterson advanced to the final round where he defeated Rodol Gauto-Mariotti of Rockhurst 6-0, 6-3. In the B draw, Lluis Altimires adavanced to the final round where he fell to Victor Klintcharov of Rockhurst 6-7, 6-4, 12-10.

In doubles competition, Alexis Bartek and Camilla Quesada teamed up and advanced to the championship round where they defeated Leslee Feldhaus and Erika Leston 8-1. Lluis Altimires and Rafael Burgiga also advanced to the doubles championship where they defeated Rodol Gauto-Mariotti and Ewen Grzegrzolka of Rockhurst 8-6.

The Northwest women will be in action again this weekend at the Truman Invitational while the men are off before heading to Truman Sept. 24.
