KANSAS CITY, Mo.-It was a great day for the Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team down at the MIAA Tournament on Friday. The Bearcats advanced to Saturday's final with a pair of wins on the day, 5-0 over Nebraska Omaha in the quarterfinals and then 5-4 over Washburn in the semifinals.

Northwest (13-12) won in convincing fashion over the Mavericks in its first match of the day. The doubles team of Erika Leston and Leslee Feldhaus got it going with an 8-6 win. The duo of Alexis Bartek and Emily Hoffman made quick work in their doubles matchup with an 8-3 win. While the tandem of Sureena Weir and Alison Wulff rounded-out the sweep with a 8-4 victory.

Only two matches were finished in the singles portion of the match as Northwest won the first two. Both Leston and Bartek won their matches in straight sets. Leston was victorious 6-1, 6-3 while Bartek won 6-2, 6-3.

Things went much different in the semifinals against top-seeded Washburn, but the result was the same as the Bearcats edged the Lady Blues for the second time this season.

The Bearcats found themselves trailing 2-1 after doubles play was over as the team of Weir and Wulff got Northwest's lone point in doubles with a 8-4 win. After losing the first singles match, Northwest won four of the final five in singles competition. Bartek was victorious in her match 6-4, 6-3 while Weir was very impressive, dropping just one game in her match to win 6-0 and 6-1. Hoffman and Ashleigh Kaberline picked up Northwest's other two wins with 6-0, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-3 victories, respectively.

The Bearcats were the only conference opponent to beat Washburn this season as Northwest gave the Lady Blues their only MIAA loss of the season earlier this month. With the win the Bearcats advance to their fourth consecutive MIAA Tournament final.

Northwest will face third-seeded Southwest Baptist at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The "Purple" Bearcats defeated Northwest earlier this season 6-3.
