Drury rallies past Northwest, 5-4
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State was spotted a 2-0 lead but couldn't pull off the upset in its season opener Friday. No. 27 Drury rallied in singles play to earn a 5-4 decision at St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club.
Drury fielded just five players and forfeited points at number three doubles and number six singles. But the Panthers split the other two doubles matches and swept the top four singles positions to improve to 4-2. All five singles matches were determined in straight sets.
Northwest took a 3-1 lead when Erika Leston and Alexis Bartek paired to beat Ivana Marevic and Abbey Sharpe, 8-4, at number one doubles. The Bearcats' fourth point came from Emily Hoffman who beat Ellen Bennett, 6-4, 6-4, at number five doubles.
Northwest's top three singles players combined to win five games against their three counterparts. Valentine Lambrechts secured the winning point with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Rocio Rapallo Fernandez at number four singles.
The Bearcats return to the courts Saturday at 5 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney in St. Joseph.
