Leston advances to round of 16
ABILENE, Texas-Northwest Missouri State junior Erika Leston advanced to the round of 16 of the 2010 ITA South Central Region Singles and Doubles Championships hosted by Abilene Christian University Friday thru Sunday.
Leston earned straight-set wins against Laura Atkins of Dallas Baptist (6-0, 6-0) and Anto Rossini (6-2, 6-2) of Central Oklahoma before bowing out to eventual champion Julia Mongin of Abilene Christian. Mongin defeated teammate and top seed Jaclyn Walker, 6-3, 6-3, in the final. The finalists then teamed to win the doubles competition against Cameron's Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber.
Leston partnered with Alexis Bartek to beat Southwest Baptist's Chrystal Guiot and Jenna Hendrickson, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the doubles tournament. Another Abilene Christian duo, Cassie Carver and Hannah Kelley, topped the Bearcats in round two.
Northwest's Ashleigh Kaberline and Sureena Weir competed together in the doubles tournament, but lost to a tandem from Cameron. Kaberline, Weir and Bartek each dropped first-round matches in the singles draw.
Leston finished the fall season with a team-best singles record of 9-3. Bartek finished 7-3. The ITA serves as the team's final competition until the spring season begins in February.
