Three Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams Named All-MIAA

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State tennis players Veronica Castilla, Sureena Weir and Lindsay Weideman are among the five Bearcats honored on the 2010 All-MIAA Women's Tennis Team released Thursday by the conference office.

Castilla (17-5, 7-0 MIAA) is a first-team choice at number three singles. The 2007 MIAA Freshman of the Year, Castilla is a four-time All-MIAA pick. She earned second-team honors as a freshman and sophomore and has been a first-team choice the past two seasons. Castilla has combined for 140 collegiate wins in singles and doubles play.

Weir (18-4, 6-0 MIAA) and Weideman (14-7, 7-0 MIAA) are second-team selections at number four and five singles, respectively. Weir lost a first-team nod despite beating Washburn's Alyssa Castillo twice during the season by scores of 6-0, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-2. Castillo (15-8, 6-1 MIAA) was the first-team pick at number four.

In addition, Northwest's number two and three doubles teams earned second-team honors. Castilla and teammate Lisa Pendrak (15-7) were 6-1 in conference play with their lone loss occurring while playing in the number one doubles position. Weir and doubles partner Brittney Browning (9-1) were 4-1 from the three position.

In conference play, Northwest's Brittney Browning went 4-0 at the number six singles position and 2-1 at the number five position. Despite the 6-1 combined record, Browning had to settle for honorable mention honors at number six singles. First-team choice Alex Crowe from Emporia State went 5-1, but wasn't in the Hornet's lineup when Browning beat Crowe's replacement 6-0, 6-1. Second-team choice Mary Lausten from Nebraska-Omaha was 5-1 with a loss to Washburn's Kristin McKee, a player Browning beat during MIAA play. Browning played number five singles when Northwest beat the Mavericks 5-4.

Northwest went 7-0 in conference play to capture the MIAA's regular season championship. The Bearcats placed second to Washburn in the MIAA tournament and finished their season with a 17-7 record.
