Northwest Stands Alone After Defeating Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State gained sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings after defeating Washburn 6-3 Monday on the Washburn Tennis Courts. At 4-0, the Bearcats (11-6) are the lone undefeated team in the league. Washburn (9-6) stands second at 4-1.
The match-turning points came at number three doubles and number six singles and Northwest junior Brittney Browning played a role in both. Browning teamed with Sureena Weir to win a 7-4 tiebreaker in doubles play against Annie Doole and Kristen McKee. Browning won a 10-6 super tiebreaker against McKee in singles play for her ninth consecutive win.
The Bearcats won two out of three doubles points and four of six singles matches. With the exception of Browning and McKee, all singles matches were decided in straight sets. Veronica Castilla (6-3, 6-2), Weir (6-0, 6-4) and Lindsay Weideman (6-1, 6-1) earned Bearcat wins at number three, four and five singles, respectively.
Northwest, ranked 41st in the nation, has won its last six matches dating back to March 26. The Bearcats return to the courts Wednesday against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
