Northwest Wins MIAA Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State was slightly shorthanded but had no trouble breezing past Fort Hays State, 6-0, Friday at the Frank Grube Courts on Northwest's campus. It was the conference opener for the Bearcats, who improved to 6-6 on the season.
Northwest played without regular starters Sureena Weir and Allison Wulff, but won two doubles matches by a score of 8-2 and surrendered just four games in earning three points in singles play.
Veronica Castilla, Lindsay Weideman and Brittney Browning earned wins at number three, four and five singles, respectively. Northwest's Lisa Pendrak and Emily Hoffman held leads in their respective matches before play was halted.
The most competitive match of the day came at number one doubles where Northwest's Erika Leston and Emily Hoffman defeated Melissa Skovira and Kelsey Bigando 8-6. It was the first win of the season for the Bearcat duo in eight matches.
The Tigers, who beat Missouri Western 5-4 earlier in the day, dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.
Northwest returns to competition Tuesday against William Jewell in Liberty, Mo.
