Northwests Edges East Central 5-4
JENKS, Okla.-Northwest Missouri State freshman Sureena Weir won a 7-5 third set against Nilsa Ramirez for the clinching point in the Bearcats' 5-4 win against East Central Friday. Weir also teamed with Allison Wulff to earn an 8-3 win at number three doubles in helping No. 44 Northwest move to 5-2.
Three of the Tigers' four points came from the top three singles positions, but the bottom of Northwest's lineup came through in the clutch. Bearcat Lindsay Weideman beat Kendra Coltrain 6-3, 6-1 at number five singles and Northwest's Brittney Browning topped Noelia Caballero 6-4, 6-2 from the number six position.
Helping Northwest take a 2-1 lead into singles play were Veronica Castilla and Lisa Pendrak who blanked Nilsa Ramirez and Rhiannon Mecanovic 8-0 at number two. Castilla and Pendrak are 5-1 as a tandem in the spring while Weir and Wulff improved to 5-2. Weir is a team best 5-1 in singles play.
