Northwest Wraps Up Play at the ITA
TOPEKA, Kan.-Four Northwest Missouri State tennis players took part in the ITA South Central Women's Champioships Friday hosted by Washburn University. The tournament included a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32 teams.
Seniors Veronica Castilla and Lisa Pendrak along with sophomore Erika Leston and freshman Sureana Weir participated for the Bearcats with Castilla and Pendrak forming one doubles tandem and Leston and Weir forming the other.
Both Leston and Weir advanced to the second round of the singles tournament. Leston defeated Central Oklahoma's Antonella Rossini, 6-1, 6-2, while Weir downed Emporia State's Amanda Morris, 6-2, 6-1.
Pendrak lost to Cameron's Carolina Mullor in the first round and Castilla fell to the three seed, Washburn's Trang LeNguyen.
Leston and Weir were pitted against the top seed of the doubles draw in the first round. Zazanna Osinska and Emina Spirtovic downed the Bearcats 6-4, 6-2.
Castilla and Pendrak lost a third-set tiebreaker to Southwest Baptist's Jolee Cook and Faiga Schmidt in the first round. Scores went 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-8.
