Five Earn All-MIAA Honors; Rosewell Named Coach of the Year

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Veronica Castilla and Ericka Leston were unanimous singles choices by the coaches to the All-MIAA First Team and Head Coach Mark Rosewell earned his 19th MIAA Coach of the Year honor in the conference postseason awards announced today.

Jordan Lipira was named to the second-team at No. 3 singles and Lina Gomez and Allison Wulff picked up second-team accolades at No. 3 doubles. Castilla and Lipira earned honorable mention honors at No. 2 doubles.

Northwest won its 11th MIAA championship last weekend and advanced as the No. 6 seed in the NCAA South Central Regional next weekend in Austin, Texas.

Castilla went undefeated at No. 4 singles in conference play and posted a 18-1 dual record in singles action this spring. She's won her last 14 singles matches, all in straight sets, dating back to March 22. She's tied for 10th in program season records with 20 wins this season.

Leston also went 8-0 in conference singles in the No. 5 position and carries an 18-match win streak into the NCAA playoffs next weekend. She leads the Bearcats with 25 victories this season, good for third in program records, and hasn't surrendered more than four games in any given set during the spring dual season.

Lipira, who earned her first career MIAA Player of the Week honors yesterday, went 7-1 during the conference season between No. 2 and No. 3 singles. She's won 12 of her last 13 matches and stands fifth in all-time program records with 74 career wins.

Gomez and Wulff posted a 16-2 overall record at No. 3 doubles and went 6-1 during the conference schedule. In their last 12 matches, the duo only lost three of more games three times and surrendered only four games combined during the MIAA tournament last weekend. Gomez is tied for eighth in program records with 69 career doubles wins.

Castilla and Lipira were undefeated in their four conference matches at No. 2 doubles and are 12-1 overall this season. Lipira is third in program records with 79 career wins while Castilla'a 61 victories are three away from 10th.
