Bearcats Win 11th MIAA Championship
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State avenged an earlier 5-4 loss to Washburn with a 5-3 victory against the Lady Blues today in the championship match of the 2009 MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. It's the 11th MIAA title for the Bearcats, who earn their 15th straight trip to the NCAA tournament.
Lisa Pendrak and Ericka Leston broke a 1-1 tie in doubles action with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles against Whitley Zitsch and Alyssa Castillo to provide a 2-1 lead for the Bearcats. It's the fifth-straight win for the duo at the No. 2 position.
The Lady Blues evened the scored 3-3 with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Leston took a straight-set victory against Annie Doole 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles for the fourth Bearcat point.
Veronica Castilla won her first set against Castillo at No. 4 singles 6-2, but needed to go into a tiebreaker in the second set to claim the point with a 7-6 (7-2) win and provide the fifth and deciding point for the Bearcats.
Northwest secured its spot into the national tournament for the 15th consecutive time in program history. The Bearcats were ranked No. 12 in the latest NCAA South Central Regional rankings and advance by virtue of the MIAA's automatic bid.
The Bearcats have equaled the conference championship total of all other active MIAA schools combined (Truman-4, Washburn-3, Emporia State-2, Missouri Southern-1, Southwest Baptist-1).
The NCAA regional tournament locations, as well as the rest of the field, will be announced April 29.
