Women's Tennis Advances to MIAA Final
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State breezed through Fort Hays State and turned the tables on Truman to advance to Sunday's MIAA tournament championship where top-seeded Washburn awaits. The Bearcats won both matches 5-0.
Northwest won 24 of 26 games in doubles play to jump out to a 3-0 lead against seventh-seeded Fort Hays State Saturday morning. The Bearcats then got a 6-0, 6-0 win from Lina Gomez at No. 1 singles and a 6-3, 6-1 win by Jordan Lipira at No. 3 singles to clinch the match. All other matches were stopped once a team reached the necessary five points to clinch the match.
Northwest lost two of three doubles points in a 5-4 loss at Truman back on April 14. The Bearcats took all three matches Saturday to en route to its win against the third-seeded Bulldogs. Lipira and Veronica Castilla each won by identical scores of 6-1, 6-1 in singles play to send the Bearcats into the final.
Northwest's Erika Leston and Lisa Pendrak beat Truman's Amy Ochs and Ellen Russell 8-6 at No. 2 doubles Saturday after losing to the duo 9-7 during the regular season. Lina Gomez and Allison Wullf turned an earlier 8-4 loss to Anna Greenwald and Kelsey Kuykendall into an 8-1 win Saturday.
To win the crown and ensure a 15th straight appearance in an NCAA regional, Northwest will have to beat the Lady Blues of Washburn Sunday. The final has been moved to the Clayview Country Club due to weather and will begin at noon. Washburn beat Northwest 5-4 on April 4 in St. Joseph, Mo.
