Northwest Falls in Five-Hour Marathon

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—Truman outlasted Northwest Missouri State on its home courts and won 5-4 following close to five hours of tennis Tuesday at the Truman Tennis Courts.

The Bulldogs took two of three doubles matches including Anna Greenwald’s and Kelsey Kuykendall’s 8-4 win against Lina Gomez and Allison Wulff at No. 3 doubles. It was just the second loss for the Bearcat tandem in 14 matches this season.

Veronica Castilla and Jordan Lipira were promoted to No. 1 doubles Tuesday and improved to 8-0 this season after beating Lindsy Blair and Courtney Walther 8-6. Castilla and Lipira went on to win their singles matches to account for three of Northwest’s four team points.

Blair and Walther recovered to score straight-set wins at No. 1 and and No. 2 doubles, respectively, for Truman. Northwest freshman Erika Leston improved to 22-1 with her win at No. 5 singles to tie the score at 4-4. Kelsey Kuykendall beat Brittany Browning, 6-3, 6-2, for the deciding point at No. 6 singles.

The outcome leaves both teams tied for second place atop the MIAA standings at 6-2. Nebraska-Omaha can make it a three-way tie with a win against Emporia State Saturday. Should that occur, the three teams would draw for the two, three and four seeds at the upcoming MIAA tournament.
