Bearcats Advance to Regional Final with 5-0 Shutout of Winona State

MARYVILLE - Northwest Missouri State women's tennis shut out Winona State 5-0 for the second time this season, earning a trip to its seventh straight NCAA Regional Championship. It's the third first round shutout win for the Bearcats in the last four years.

Northwest swept doubles play, led by Jordan Lipira and Veronica Castilla with a 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Lina Gomez and Kristina Vucenov picked up their fourth straight win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Kaycee Moore and Amanda Asche 8-1.

Gomez defated Asche again in singles action, winning 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Vucenov won her 29th singles match and provided the winning point for Northwest in a straight set victory against Heather Pierce at No. 1 singles.

Castilla and Gomez both had 1-0 leads after their first sets and were leading in the second set when the fifth and winning point was scored.

Up Next: Northwest faces Emporia State tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Frank Grube Courts on the Northwest campus. The winner advances to the NCAA National Tournament in Houston, Texas.
