Northwest To Host Men's, Women's Tennis Regionals
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State men's and women's tennis teams each will host an NCAA regional tournament May 8-9 on the Frank Grube Tennis Courts and High Rise Tennis Courts on the Bearcat campus.
There are 16 regional hosts on both the men's and women's sides which encompass the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The winning teams advance to nationals hosted by Harris County Sports Authority & Rice University May 15-17 in Houston, Texas.
The Northwest women (21-4) host Northern Sun champion Winona State (8-14) in one regional semifinal. MIAA foes Washburn (12-6) and Emporia State (13-4) dual in the other.
The Bearcats beat the Warriors 5-0 in a meeting in Topeka, Kan., March 8. The Bearcats have twice topped Washburn and won their only meeting with Emporia State.
The Bearcat men (15-5) face Emporia State (9-8) in the first round. Northwest won its regular season meeting with the Hornets 7-2. Washburn (12-6) and North Central Conference member St. Cloud State (16-9) meet on the other side of the bracket.
It's the 14th straight year the Northwest women have made the tournament field dating back to 1995 and the fifth time the Bearcats have hosted. The Bearcats have won their regional and advanced to nationals in each of the last five seasons and also won in 1997.
The Northwest men have qualified for postseason play for the eighth time in the last nine years and for the 11th time since the tournament was reformatted in 1983. The Bearcats are hosting for the second year in a row and the fourth time overall.
Start times for each match will be released Thursday. St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club in St. Joseph, Mo., will be used in case of inclement weather.
