Northwest Meets SBU in Sunday's Final
TOPEKA, Kan.-The top two teams entering the MIAA Team Championships will meet in Sunday's final as top-seeded Northwest Missouri State (21-3) takes on second-seeded Southwest Baptist (15-7) at 10 a.m. on the campus of Washburn University. Northwest will be gunning for their league-leading 10th MIAA title.
The green Bearcats beat Missouri Western 5-0 and Washburn 5-3 on their road to the final. The purple Bearcats knocked out Fort Hays State 5-0 and Truman 5-3.
Northwest earned a 6-3 decision against Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., back on March 24. The Bearcats took two of three doubles points and four of six singles matches. Two of Northwest's four singles wins needed a third set.
Bearcat senior Kristina Vucenov faces Jolee Cook at No. 1 singles. Vucenov beat Cook in straight sets in the first meeting and if she wins Sunday, Vucenov will break Yasmine Osborn's program record of 27 singles victories in a season.
Vucenov saw her streak of 19 straight wins come to an end Saturday, but the top-ranked player in the North Central region is 27-4 on the year.
Jordan Lipira (19-7) and Lina Gomez (16-6) fell in their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles against SBU earlier this season but enter Sunday's final having won nine and eight consecutive matches, respectively.
Veronica Castilla (13-10) knocked off the 13th-ranked player in the region Saturday in straight sets. She'll face SBU's Chelsey Janzen at No. 2 singles. Castilla beat Janzen 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the first meeting.
Lisa Pendrak (20-4) and Carolina Amaral (14-2) fill out the Bearcats' singles lineup. Pendrak played No. 6 singles in the first meeting, but is expected to play at No. 5 Sunday.
The winner of Sunday's match earns the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament to be played May 8-9 or May 9-10. The sites and pairings of the tournament will be announced Wednesday, April 30.
