Northwest Advances To Title Match

TOPEKA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State bested Missouri Western 5-0 and Washburn 5-3 Saturday to advance to the finals of the MIAA Team Championships.

The top-seeded Bearcats (21-3) will face second-seeded Southwest Baptist (15-7) at 10 a.m. Sunday for a chance to win their league-leading 10th MIAA championship. SBU defeated Fort Hays State 5-0 and Truman 5-3 to advance to the final.

Kristina Vucenov defeated Missouri Western's Kristy Pechous 6-2, 6-0, in her opening match of the day to earn her 19th straight win and 27th of the season. Vucenov tied Yasmine Osborn's 1997 mark for the most single-season singles wins in program history.

The Bearcats swept all three doubles matches against the Griffons (3-16) and got singles victories from Vucenov and Jordan Lipira to end the match.

Vucenov missed in her first chance to surpass Osborn. In a match featuring the top two singles players in the region, it was Washburn's second-ranked Diana Goldsmith who earned the decision, topping Vucenov in straight sets 6-0, 6-3. It was the first time Goldsmith had beaten Vucenov in three tries.

Northwest trailed 2-1 after doubles play against Washburn, but scored four of the five singles matches that were completed. Veronica Castilla upset the 13th-ranked player in the region, Amber Raindl, 6-2, 6-2. Lipira (No. 3), Lina Gomez (No. 4) and Lisa Pendrak (No. 6) earned straight set victories to secure Northwest's spot in the final.

It will be the second meeting between Northwest and Southwest Baptist, which share the same moniker. The green Bearcats of Northwest topped the purple Bearcats of SBU 6-3 in Bolivar, Mo., March 24.
