Bearcats Rise to the Occasion; Beat UNO
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Playing without top player Kristina Vucenov, the 31st-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats edged Nebraska-Omaha 5-4 Wednesday at Frank Grube Tennis Courts.
It was the sixth straight win for Northwest (17-3), the second-ranked team in the North Central Region Rankings. Nebraska-Omaha (7-3) is ranked eighth regionally.
Vucenov, the ninth-ranked player in the nation, sat out the match with an injury, but plans to return in time for the MIAA tournament April 26-27. Her loss meant that each Bearcat had to move up a spot in singles play.
Jordan Lipira and Lina Gomez earned three-set wins at number two and three singles, respectively. Carolina Amaral earned a straight-set win at number four. Brittney Browning, who entered the lineup at number six, lost in a super tiebreaker to Jenna Nielsen 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 10-8.
Gomez (14-6) and Lipira (15-7) have won their last six and five singles matches, respectively.
The Bearcats took two of three doubles points to jump out to a 2-1 lead. Browning teamed with Gomez for the first time this season to earn an 8-5 victory at three doubles. Castilla and Lipira competed for the first time together and won 8-3 at two doubles.
