KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Northwest Missouri State women's tennis player Kristina Vucenov (pronounced vu-CHE-nov) has been named the MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ended March 30 as announced by the conference office. Vucenov, ranked ninth nationally, has won 12 straight singles matches to improve to 20-3 in singles and 13-3 in doubles this season.
Vucenov, a 5-foot-5 senior from Novi Sad, Serbia, was undefeated in No. 1 singles and 3-1 at No. 2 doubles with teammate Veronica Castilla as the Bearcats went 3-1 last week -- 2-1 against teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Top 40.
In a 6-3 win at No. 39 Southwest Baptist last Monday (March 24), Vucenov and Castilla teamed for an 8-4 win over Iveta Wolfgramm and Johanna Ollson. Vucenov then handed Jolee Cook a 6-3, 6-1 loss in singles.
During a swing through Texas, Vucenov handed Midwestern (Texas) State's Melissa dosPrazeres a 6-1, 6-2 setback after she and Castilla dropped their doubles set to Ann Indeherberge and Christina Oliviera, 8-3. Northwest recorded a 5-4 win over the Mustangs Wednesday (March 26).
In a 7-1 win at Dallas Baptist (Texas) the next day, Vucenov and Castillo rebounded for an 8-4 win in doubles over Candis Minor and Brittany McCleary. Vucenov then defeated Jeanelle Stines, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 1 singles.
Vucenov had a hand in two of Northwest's three points in a 6-3 home loss to No. 11 Northeastern (Okla.) State Saturday (March 29). She and Castillo claimed a 9-7 win over Celine Martinez and Alicia Augustinska, then Vucenov needed three sets for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Zuzanna Osinska.
She is a graduate of Laza Kostic High School, and transferred to Northwest from Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University, where she was a second-team NAIA All-America in 2007 as a junior before the school dropped the program. Vucenov won the ITA Division II North Central Singles title and was fifth at ITA nationals in the fall.
