
MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State senior Kristina Vucenov defeated top-seeded Diana Goldsmith of Washburn in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, Sunday in the final of the ITA North Central Regional Championships. Vucenov advances to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala., Oct. 11-14.
Vucenov, the tournament’s second seed, won six matches and bested a field of 68 participants. She won each match in straight sets and dropped 15 games the entire tournament. She lost one game in her first four matches.
A Northwest student-athlete has now won the singles title in three of the last four years. Gena Lindsay won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005.
Natalie Villaflor and Marcella Bayon of Emporia State won the doubles championship. They topped Missouri Southern’s tandem of Michelle Hall and Katie Anderson, 8-5, in the final. Villaflor and Hall were semifinalists in the singles tournament.
In addition to the ITA tournament at Northwest, 60 other regional championships are being played across the country over the last three weeks of September. This is the 17th consecutive year that Northwest has hosted either a men’s or women’s ITA regional championship event.
