Gene Steinmeyer enters his 10th season at Northwest Missouri State and 23rd as a collegiate head coach nine wins short of career victory No. 500. He’s the eighth winningest coach among his active NCAA Division II peers.

Steinmeyer led Northwest to its second MIAA tournament championship and fifth NCAA postseason appearance, third under his guidance, last season. The Bearcats went 18-14 overall and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional semifinals with a 72-71 overtime win against No. 1 seed West Texas A&M.

The 2007-08 campaign marked Steinmeyer’s fifth winning season at Northwest and his fourth with 15 or more wins. His team led the MIAA in steals (11.34 spg), turnover margin (+4.59) and offensive rebounds (15.72 rpg). Mandi Schumacher became the second Bearcat to be named the MIAA tournament MVP.

In his tenure, Steinmeyer has coached one first-team All-MIAA player, three second-team, 13 honorable mention and two all-defensive players.

In 2006-07, Northwest finished 18-12 and 10-8 in conference play. The Bearcats advanced to the NCAA tournament and lost in the first round to West Texas A&M.

The Bearcats won the MIAA tournament in 2003-04 to advance to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 1990 and did so with a 24-7 record, the second-most wins in program history. Sarah Vollertsen earned MIAA tournament MVP honors after being named to the All-MIAA First Team.

Steinmeyer came to Northwest after a successful 15-year career at Doange College in Crete, Neb. He finished with a 360-141 career record and led the Tigers to eight Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference championships, three district championships and three consecutive NAIA national semifinal appearances. He was a five-time NAIA District 11 Coach of the Year and was the Nebraska State College Coach of the Year twice.

Steinmeyer was inducted into the Doane Athletics Hall of Fame Jan. 30, where 30 former players welcomed him for his induction ceremonies.

Steinmeyer placed a player on the Academic All-America squad in each of his six years prior to Northwest. He maintained a 100-percent graduation rate among his four-year players.

Prior to his time at Doane, Steinmeyer found success at the high school level. In five years as the head coach at Wilber-Clatonia (Neb.) High School, he won a Nebraska Class C state championship, two conference championships and two district championships.

He also served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Milford (Neb.) High School and Humboldt (Neb.) High School.

Steinmeyer received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1973. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1988.

Steinmeyer is married to Michele, who serves as the athletic department office manager. The couple reside in Maryville and have a nine-year son, Sam.

Lori Hopkins is in her sixth season with the Bearcat basketball program.

Hopkins came to Northwest after a two-year assistant coaching stint at The Metropolitan State College of Denver during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.

Hopkins earned an elementary education degree from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1994 and is currently pursuing her master’s degree here at Northwest in health/physical education/recreation/dance.

Hopkins was a member of the Nebraska Wesleyan basketball team from 1989 to 1991.

Despite playing only two full seasons at NWU, she ranks fifth in team history for field goal percentage (.500, 205-410) and ninth in career rebounds with 459.

For a single season, her 1990-91 rebounding total of 286 and 10.8 rebounds per game rank second all-time at Nebraska Wesleyan.

She also averaged 14.3 points per game as NWU led NCAA Division III in scoring at 88.5 points per game in 1990-91 and tied the previous school record for wins, finishing 15-11. Her 372 points scored and .525 (139-265) field goal percentage that season rank fifth and ninth, respectively, on the Nebraska Wesleyan all-time charts.

Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Hopkins coached basketball, volleyball and track and field at Rising City (Neb.) High School. While coaching basketball, Hopkins led Rising City to two district finals.

Hopkins’ responsibilities at Northwest include practice preparation, pre-game preparation, breaking down opponents’ game film, recruiting and other duties.

Hopkins, formerly Lori Henderson, was married this past fall on Sept. 30 to Terry Hopkins. They reside in Maryville, while Terry teaches and coaches girl’s basketball in Savannah, Mo.
