Scheel to join Smith on women’s basketball staff
Maryville, Mo. – Michael Smith, Northwest Missouri State head women’s basketball coach, announced the addition of Buck Scheel to his staff Monday. Scheel comes to Northwest after three seasons as the top assistant at State Fair Community College (SFCC) in Sedalia.
“We are excited about Coach Scheel joining the Northwest family,” Smith said. “He brings with him a wealth of recruiting ties throughout the Midwest at both the high school and junior college level. Personally, I’ve known Buck for a number of years and have always been impressed with his ability to relate to student-athletes. He is well respected among his peers and comes highly recommended and we cannot wait for him to get started.”
Scheel will join Smith after a successful run at SFCC where the program went 68-28 and advanced to the Region 16 tournament all three years, including a Region 16 championship in 2011. The Lady Roadrunners also captured the program’s first victory in the NJCAA National Tournament. Scheel’s duties at SFCC included game preparation, along with scouting, and film exchange. He was also involved in recruiting and coaching the offense.
"I'm very thankful and excited for the opportunity to join Coach Smith's staff, and I look forward to assisting him with his vision for the program," Scheel said.
Scheel also brings three years of head coaching experience. Prior to his time at SFCC, he served as the head women’s basketball coach at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, from 2007 to 2010. During his time at SWCC, Scheel coached multiple all-conference athletes both on the floor and in the classroom.
During the summer of 2009, Scheel served as a curriculum designer and instructor for Midwest Elite Basketball. He designed and directed specific camps that fit the systems for the teams involved in the camps.
Scheel also brings a solid resume as a player. He played junior college basketball at Lincoln School of Commerce, now Kaplan University in Lincoln, Neb., where he was a co-captain for two seasons. He helped lead his team to the school’s first 20-win season and was named the team's MVP in 2003. He earned an associate's degree in business administration.
Scheel transferred to Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, where he was a co-captain for two years. As a senior, he helped lead his team to its first winning season in NAIA Division II. The team also advanced to the Midwest Classic Conference championship game. He began his coaching career at Waldorf serving as a student assistant for one year.
While at Waldorf, he received his bachelor’s degree in business management with an emphasis in marketing. He also received a master’s degree in sports management from Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Ala. Scheel is a native of Columbus, Neb.
