Smith introduced as women’s basketball head coach

Northwest Athletic Director Mel Tjeerdsma officially welcomed Michael Smith to Northwest Missouri State Monday afternoon in a press conference to introduce him as the new women’s basketball head coach.

Smith becomes the program’s seventh head coach and joins the Bearcat family after five seasons as the head coach of former MIAA rival Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.  During his tenure at Truman State, the Bulldogs increased their win total each season and advanced to the MIAA Tournament the last three seasons.  He helped lead the Bulldogs from the bottom of the conference with an 8-19 record in his first season to a 20-6 record in 2012-13, which included 11 weeks ranked in the WBCA Top 25 Poll.

The Northwest alum and former graduate assistant coach is excited to be back on the campus where his coaching career started in 1996 under former Northwest coaching great, the late Wayne Winstead.

“I was very fortunate to be a part of this community for two years, but it was the biggest two years of my coaching career that helped to mold me as a man and as a coach,” Smith shared with the crowd at the introductory press conference.  “I’d like to thank (Northwest President) Dr. John Jasinski for sitting down with me and seeing my vision for this program, and also (athletics director) Mel Tjeerdsma for this opportunity.”

He went on to share his vision and passion for the future of the program.

“We want to see these young ladies succeed.  I’ll tell you this much, we are going to work extremely hard at it; I make that promise right now.”

Smith has a proven track record of stepping into challenging situations and achieving success.

“I know that if I can go into a place and apply my system and put my stamp on it, we can be successful. We are going to play fun, we will get up and down and we will make it fun for everyone.”

Smith also understands the culture of Northwest and the foundation of success that has been built within the women’s basketball program.

“Make no doubt about it we are going to do things the right way here.  We are going to find quality people that want to be a part of Bearcat Nation.
