MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team will meet up with 9th-ranked Washburn, who claimed the league title Saturday, and the No. 1 seed in the MIAA tournament Friday at noon for their third matchup of the season.
This is a story Northwest is very familiar with. In the 2007-08 MIAA tournament the Bearcats defeated the Missouri Southern Lions in the first round and went on to upset No. 1 seed Washburn 59-56 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
The Bearcats are coming off a solid victory over Missouri Southern 77-72. During the second half first-year Head Coach Mark Kellogg’s team was able to extend their lead up to 17 points with the help of Ashleigh Nelson who finished with 21 points.
Tember Schechinger fell one rebound short of a double-double as she finished with nine rebounds and 10 points. Annie Mathews and Alexis Boeh also finished in double digits with 14 and 12 points respectively.
This will be the third matchup this season against the Lady Blues. Northwest dropped the first game 64-53 at Washburn and the second game 61-54 at home. The Bearcats were able to jump to a 7-0 lead in the second game and trailed by only five at the half but couldn’t pull off the upset.
The third time could be the charm as No. 9 seed Northwest will meet up with No. 1 seed Washburn one final time this season. Tip-off at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City is scheduled for noon Friday.
