Northwest faces off with Fort Hays

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team will host Fort Hays Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena only one week removed from the two teams meeting up in Hays, Kan.

The Lady Tigers won the first bout against Northwest taking a 65-53 victory. Kate Lehmen led FHSU with 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. The Bearcats were led by Ashleigh Nelson who went 3 for 7 from behind the three point line and finished with 15 points.

Fort Hays (16-5, 8-5) currently sits in sixth place in the MIAA conference standings. The top 12 teams advance to the MIAA Tournament with the top four team earning a first round bye. Seeds 5-12 will meet in a first round game at the higher seeds home court with the winning team moving on to Kansas City. Northwest is currently 5-8 in conference play and are 10th in the standings and continues to battle for a first round home game.

Maggie Marnin and Ashleigh Nelson have a chance to reach the 250 point mark on the season this week. Marnin is 10 points away from the plateau while Nelson is 11 points away.

The Bearcats sit at the top of the MIAA conference in field goal percentages as they are shooting 44.6 percent from the floor. Northwest also leads the conference for the 12th week in a row in steals as they are averaging 11.4 steals per game.

Northwest and Fort Hays will tip-off Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. Northwest will also host Washburn in a rematch Saturday with a scheduled start time of 1:30 p.m.
