Bearcats “Pink Out” this Saturday
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team continues MIAA play Saturday afternoon as they host Missouri Western in their annual “Pink Out” game. Tip from Bearcat Arena is slated for 1:30 p.m.
February is a month where many college teams across the country join together in the fight against Breast Cancer. For Northwest Missouri State head coach Gene Steinmeyer, his Bearcats have found ways to help local cancer survivors, and this year is no different. Steinmeyer and the Bearcats will focus their efforts on the Jay and Michelle Drake family as Jay continues his battle with sarcoma cancer. The Bearcats and the Drake’s want to encourage everyone to come out and show that ‘Tough Guys Wear Pink’.
A number of different activities will take place during Saturday’s game including a silent auction highlighted with autographed Bearcat items. The auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. and bidding will close in the second half of the men’s game. All proceeds of the silent auction will go to the Drake family to help with medical costs.
The Bearcats currently have one player scoring in double figures. Senior guard, Abby Henry, averages 12.8 points per game while senior guard Shelly Martin comes in at just below the double-digit mark, contributing 9.1 points per game.
Freshman forward Annie Matthews is establishing herself this season as she has started the last eleven games for Northwest. For the season, Matthews is averaging 4.8 points per game while pulling down 5 rebounds per game, ranking her second of the team.
Northwest is currently pacing the MIAA in steals, averaging 11.1 steals per game as a team. Henry is pacing Northwest with 49 steals on the season and ranks third in the MIAA averaging 2.5 steals per game while Martin is averaging 2.2 steals per game.
The Griffons are coming off of an 81-75 road loss to 13th-ranked Arkansas Tech. Missouri Western is 6-15 overall and 4-11 in conference play.
The Griffons are 2-9 on the road this season and lost six of their last seven games.
Jessica Koch is leading the Griffons offensively, averaging 23.5 points per game. She also leads Missouri Western in rebounds, pulling down 6.8 rebounds per game.
The Griffons have not won when playing in Bearcat Arena since the 2007-08 season.
Northwest will continue MIAA play next Wednesday when they travel to Kirksville, Mo., for a MIAA matchup with the Truman State Bulldogs.
