Martin crosses 1,000 points as ‘Cats open 2nd Half
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State opens the second half of the MIAA schedule on Sunday as they travel to Emporia State in the middle of a three-game road swing. Tip from White Auditorium is slated for 1:30 p.m.
The Bearcats are 2-2 in their last four games after snapping an eight-game skid through December.
Northwest will try to rebound after a heart breaking overtime loss on Wednesday to Missouri Southern.
After a career high 24 points from freshman Maggie Marnin the Bearcats will look to put the rest of the pieces together as they try to make a run for the MIAA Tournament.
At 2-8 in league play Northwest sits in a three-way tie for last place. However, all three teams are only one game behind Missouri Western at 3-7 who holds onto the eighth and final spot for March’s post-season tournament in Kansas City.
Senior guard Shelly Martin surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career and looks to be back on track after scoring 19 points in Wednesday’s loss. All but two points came in the second half for Martin as she helped the Bearcats force the extra period before free throws iced the game for the Lions.
With Martin’s 1,000 point, Northwest now has two current players in the 1,000 point club as Abby Henry enters Sunday’s contest with 1,248 points for her career. Henry, who battled a hand injury during the early part of the season, leads Northwest at 13.2 points per game.
The 20th-ranked Hornets sit at 8-2 in the MIAA and are also 2-2 in their last four games after rattling off 10 straight wins. In those 10 wins, includes a 68-56 victory over Northwest in Maryville on the final day of November.
Northwest will close out its road swing on Wednesday in a MIAA double header at Washburn.
