Bearcats host red-hot Gorillas
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team closes out the December portion of the home schedule as it hosts Pittsburg State in MIAA action Wednesday evening. Fans attending the game also are encouraged to celebrate the Holidays with the Bearcats and don their ugliest sweater.
The Bearcats currently sit at 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. Wednesday’s task for the Bearcats will not get easier as they host the Gorillas, who are 8-0.
Northwest is in the midst of arguably one of the toughest season opening schedules in the country. Fresh off of playing 15th-ranked Washburn, the Bearcats host their third team that is either ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll.
Senior guard Abby Henry returned to the floor after a brief three game absence for Northwest last Saturday against Washburn despite nursing a broken thumb. She has received help from underclassmen in her return.
Junior Ashley Thayer has emerged as one of the top shooting Bearcats connecting on 43 percent of her shots from behind the three-point arc. Post players Maggie Marnin and Annie Mathews have also been solid in the last two games, teaming with senior Tara Roach to provide solid minutes for the Bearcats. Although those minutes have come in the second half, Northwest put together a pair of runs to pull the games back to within single digits in each contest.
Students and fans are encouraged to support the Bearcats by wearing their ugliest Christmas sweaters and entering the “Ugly Sweater Contest.” Bobby Bearcat will also be dressed in his holiday attire and available for pictures between games. Fans are encouraged to bring their own camera as a photographer will not be provided.
