Bearcats open season No. 14 in USA Today/ESPN Poll
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer and the Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team will start their 2011-12 campaign ranked No. 14 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 released Tuesday.
The Bearcats are looking to defend their MIAA crown coming off a record year that saw them finish 29-5 and earn their first ever trip to the NCAA tournament. Coach Steinmeyer returns starters Abby Henry and Shelly Martin both of whom averaged double figure points for the Bearcats as juniors.
Henry led Northwest averaging 5.1 assists per game to go along with 13.9 points per game. The senior from Bellevue, Neb., started in all 34 games last year for the Bearcats en route to a National Semifinal appearance. Martin added 11.4 points per game while shooting 39 percent from behind the three-point arc and a team high 89 percent from the free throw line.
Northwest opens their season on Nov. 11 at NCAA Division I UMKC followed by a Top 25 match-up on Nov. 15 with No. 24 Northeastern State. The Riverhawks hosted the 2011 NCAA South Central Regional in which the Bearcats won earning a trip to the Elite Eight. Northeastern State finished 25-5 last year falling to Central Oklahoma in the Regional Semifinals.
