Bearcats picked to finish 5th in preseason poll
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer and the defending Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Champion Northwest Missouri State Bearcats were picked to finish fifth in the 2011-12 preseason MIAA Coaches Poll released by the league office Monday.
Northwest received 56 points placing them in a tie with Missouri Southern at fifth. NCAA South Central Region qualifier Washburn collected 10 first place votes and 100 points to run away with the top spot; coaches cannot vote for their own team.
Emporia State earned the other first place vote and was picked second followed by Central Missouri and Pittsburg State ahead of the Bearcats and Lions.
Northwest was tabbed third in the preseason Media Poll receiving one first place vote and 139 points. Washburn was picked first garnering 12 first place votes and 171 points followed by Emporia State who picked up three first place votes and 154 points.
The Bearcats are coming off their first ever trip to the Elite Eight and reaching the National Semifinals where they fell to Michigan Tech 89-78. Northwest returns two starters in Abby Henry and Shelly Martin both of who averaged over 10 points per game last season.
Northwest opens the season on Nov. 11 at UMKC with a 4 p.m. tipoff. The Bearcats first action at Bearcat Arena will be at the Annual Winstead-Reeves Classic Nov. 18-19 when they host William Jewell and Missouri Valley in tournament play.
