Steinmeyer named Regional Coach of the Year

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State head women's basketball coach Gene Steinmeyer was named Region Six Coach of the Year Monday at the Elite Eight's Banquet of Champions in St. Joseph, Mo.

Steinmeyer, who was also named MIAA Coach of the Year, has led the Bearcats (28-4) to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Steinmeyer also won the program's first outright MIAA championship and brought home Northwest's first regular season crown since 1984.

The Bearcats' 28 wins and .875 win percentage are program records. The team has won 24 of its last 26 contests and has won all six postseason games including three in capturing the MIAA tournament title and three more in winning the South Central Regional Tournament.

Steinmeyer is Regional Coach of the Year for the first time in his 12 seasons at Northwest. He has led the Bearcats to three MIAA Tournament championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. Steinmeyer is a two-time MIAA Coach of the Year honoree.
