Bearcats fall at Missouri Southern
JOPLIN, Mo.-18th-ranked Northwest Missouri State dropped its season finale Saturday afternoon at Missouri Southern 70-62. The Bearcats hit just one three-pointer in the loss, a season low, and shot 38 percent from the field. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak.
Northwest (22-4, 18-4 MIAA) shot 48 percent in the first half and carried a 39-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. Northwest extended its lead to 14 early in the half when Gentry Dietz hit the Bearcats' lone trey of the game.
Missouri Southern (17-9, 15-7 MIAA) fought back and chipped away at the Bearcats' lead, eventually jumping in front on a Larritta Gipson three-pointer with 6:04 left to play. The Lions didn't relinquish the lead from there on. Southern shot 56 percent from the floor in the second stanza, while Northwest shot just 28 percent (9-for-32) in the half.
Dietz led the way for Northwest with 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Kyla Roehrig had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the loss. Gabby Curtis added 14 points and seven boards.
Jasmine Lovejoy led the Lions with 20 points and seven rebounds. Northwest went 1-of-10 from deep in the game and were outrebounded by the Lions 44-36. Points in the paint were even at 32 in the ballgame despite the solid play of Dietz and Roehrig.
Northwest will be the number one seed in the MIAA Tournament next weekend having clinched the conference crown on Wednesday night. The Bearcats will play eighth-seeded Truman at noon on Friday. The Bearcats won both contests this season against the Bulldogs. Winning 73-72 in double overtime in Kirksville back in January and 87-69 just 10 days ago in Maryville.
