Big second half leads Northwest to win
WARRENSBURG, Mo.-No. 20 Northwest Missouri State used a balanced scoring attack and a big second half effort to win on the road Saturday afternoon over Central Missouri 88-74. All five Bearcat starters scored in double figures in the victory.
Central Missouri jumped out to an early five-point lead in the game before Northwest went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-13 lead with just under 12 minutes to go in the opening half. The Bearcats never trailed from that point on.
The Jennies would tie the game twice in the first half, but Northwest (21-3, 17-3 MIAA) built as much as an 11-point lead in the half before Central (14-12, 10-10 MIAA) went on a 7-0 run the final two minutes to dwindle the Bearcat advantage to 35-31 at the break. The Bearcats began the second half going on a 23-12 run and extended their lead to as many as 19, twice. Central would get no closer than within 12 points the rest of the game.
Northwest shot 54 percent in the second half and the 53 points scored in the half, ties for the most points scored in a single half this season for the Bearcats. Abby Henry led all scorers with 22 points, went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line and had three steals. Gabby Curtis, the MIAA's leading scorer bumped her average up even more, scoring 20 points and adding six rebounds and four assists.
Kyla Roehrig recorded her 10th double-double of the season, registering 19 points and 12 rebounds. Gentry Dietz and Shelly Martin each scored 12 points. Martin was 4-for-8 from three-point range. The Bearcats hit twice as many foul shots as the Jennies (18-9) and also out-rebounded Central 44-32. Northwest held a 19-4 second-chance points advantage in the win and had 12-more points in the paint.
Up next for Northwest will be the final home game of the season on Wednesday night against Southwest Baptist. It will be "Senior Night" from Bearcat Arena. Northwest won the first meeting this season with Baptist 78-68 back in January.
