Curtis and Bearcats, all smiles against Western
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State made 11-of-12 free-throws the final 1:06 of the game to hang on to win at rival Missouri Western 91-82 Saturday night in St. Joseph. Gabby Curtis led all scorers with 34 points in the win.
It was a tail of two halves at Looney Fieldhouse. Northwest (19-3, 15-3 MIAA) built a 53-35 lead at halftime after shooting 51 percent from the field and forcing nine turnovers. The Griffons shot 39 percent in the opening stanza. Kyla Roehrig had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the half, including a last-second tip-in to end it.
The second half went much differently, as Missouri Western (11-10, 8-9 MIAA) shot nearly 56 percent in the half, while Northwest shot 35.5 percent and went just 2-for-12 from beyond the arc. The Bearcats led by as many as 20 with 18 minutes to go before Western went on a 26-9 run and cut the Northwest lead to 67-64 with seven minutes left.
Five quick points and eight points off of four Gentry Dietz put-backs helped lengthen the Bearcats' lead before they would salt the game away at the line down the stretch.
Dietz and Roehrig combined for 31 points and 26 rebounds on 12-of-25 shooting. Curtis added three assists, three steals and one block to her 34 points. Abby Henry had 10 points and five assists, Shelly Martin had nine points and four steals.
Lauren Nolke led four Griffons in double figures with 24 on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Northwest held the turnover advantage 20-12 and scored 13 more points off of turnovers than did Western. The Bearcats went 23-of-33 from the free-throw line, while Western was 8-for-9.
Next up for the Bearcats will be a meeting with Truman in Maryville on Wednesday. Northwest won 73-72 in overtime earlier this year at Truman. Dietz scored 27 points and pulled down 11 boards in the January win.
