Northwest is upset at Fort Hays State
HAYS, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State's 11-game winning streak was snapped Saturday afternoon as the 23rd-ranked Bearcats were upset at Fort Hays State 84-78. The Tigers made a season-high 15 three-pointers on 60 percent shooting from behind the arc in the game.
Gabby Curtis scored 18 of her team-high 23 points in the first half for Northwest (15-3, 11-3 MIAA) as the Bearcats went on a 36-16 run the final 12 minutes of the half to hold a 46-33 halftime lead. But the second half was a different story from the first, as Fort Hays came out on a tear, hitting nine three-pointers in the period, including three consecutive three-pointers from Crista Bechard to begin the half. The Tigers shot nearly 52 percent in the second stanza, while Northwest shot just 37 percent.
The Tigers went on a 22-7 run the final nine minutes of the ballgame and hit five free-throws in the final 40 seconds to ice the victory. Traci Keyser led four Tigers (9-9, 6-8 MIAA) in double figures with 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Gentry Dietz continued to put up big numbers against Fort Hays in her career as she had 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, five rebounds and two blocks.
Shelly Martin added 14 points on 4-for-6 from three-point range. Kyla Roehrig had nine points and nine boards, while Abby Henry dished-out six assists for Northwest who shot 44 percent from the floor and just 12 turnovers, but Fort Hays shot 47 percent and had just 10 turnovers. The Tigers also hit eight more three-pointers in the game.
Northwest has a pair of home games next week where the Bearcats are 11-0 on the year, as they host Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night. Pittsburg State comes to Maryville on Saturday afternoon.
