Bearcats win ninth-straight with win over Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Gabby Curtis poured in a game-high 27 points to lead Northwest Missouri State to its ninth-straight victory on Monday night as the Bearcats defeated Missouri Southern 75-64. The nine consecutive victories are the most for Northwest since the 1983-84 season.
Northwest struggled to start the game and went just 5-for-21 from the floor the first 9:30 of the game and trailed 17-11 with 10:43 to go in the first half. The Bearcats would eventually heat up and put together an impressive 25-9 run to end the half behind the strength of three three-pointers by Shelly Martin, and led at the break 36-26.
The Bearcats continued to stay hot to begin the second half and controlled the rest of the game, building as much as a 20-point lead with 10:01 left at 58-38. Southern would go on a bit of a run and cut the Northwest lead to nine a couple of times, but that was as close as they would get as Curtis took over in the second half for the Bearcats. Curtis scored 18 points and went 6-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from deep in the half.
Abby Henry had 18 for the Bearcats (13-2, 9-2 MIAA) and tied a career-high with nine assists. Kyla Roehrig got her fifth double-double in the last six games with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance. She also chipped in with two blocks and two steals. Gentry Dietz had 11 boards as well to go along with three assists.
Northwest shot 40 percent from the field in the win and hit 8-of-18 three-point attempts (44 percent). Southern (9-6, 7-4 MIAA) shot 37.5 percent and made 6-of-20 three-pointers (30 percent). Northwest also went 21-for-24 from the charity stripe, while the Lions were 10-of-13. Dietz, Curtis, Henry, Martin and Roehrig scored all of Northwest's 75 points. Jasmine Lovejoy led the Lions with 23 on 8-of-20 shooting.
Next up for Northwest will be the beginning of the second time through the MIAA schedule for the Bearcats as they host tenth-ranked Emporia State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
