Hot Shooting Leads Northwest to Win
BOLIVAR, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State overcame a slow start to the second half on Saturday night and battled back to defeat Southwest Baptist on the road 78-68. Gentry Dietz led the Bearcats with 23 points and also pulled down five rebounds.
Northwest (12-2, 8-2 MIAA) jumped out to a great start to begin the game, scoring the first 11 points of the contest and went 5-for-9 from the floor. The Bearcats would continue to build their first half lead, and led by as many as 16 points twice, at 21-5 and 27-11. Southwest Baptist (6-8, 3-7 MIAA) would cut into the lead as the half went on and Northwest led by just six at the half, 37-31.
Southwest Baptist started the second half just like Northwest did the first, and came out of the break going on a 17-4 run and built its biggest lead of the game at 48-43 with 15:09 remaining in the game. Northwest would shake it off and came back to outscore the "purple" Bearcats 19-8 over the next 6:50. Baptist would get to within two, but that was as close as they'd get as Northwest took control the final six minutes of the game.
Abby Henry shook of the little slump she had been in and scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and also dished-out four assists. Kyla Roehrig recorded her fourth double-double in the last five games with an 11-point, 13-rebound performance and also had four assists and three blocks. Gabby Curtis added 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Shelly Martin recorded a career-high five steals in the win.
The Bearcats shot a season-high 56 percent from the field, helping to overcome 19 turnovers, the second-most of the season for Northwest. The Bearcats also made 11 free throws while Baptist made just three. Baptist was powered throughout the game though by hitting 13 three-pointers to Northwest's three.
Northwest will have a quick turnaround as the Bearcats next will host Missouri Southern on Monday night. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow.
