Dual posts conquer Griffons

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior post players Kyla Roehrig and Gentry Dietz scored 19 points each and combined for 25 rebounds as the Bearcats beat Missouri Western 81-73 Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena.

The Bearcats (9-2, 5-2 MIAA) improved to 6-0 at home and have won five in a row for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Northwest entered as the ninth-highest scoring team in the nation and has averaged 80 points a game during its win streak.

Dietz had 13 rebounds to record her first double-double in three games this season. She had 10 double-doubles a year ago. Dietz contributed 28 minutes off the Bearcat bench, made 7 of 10 shots and had four blocks.

Dietz, Roehrig and guard Gabby Curtis combined to score Northwest's first 23 points of the second half. The Bearcats held a 36-33 advantage at the break and built a double-digit lead behind the trio. Abby Henry joined the fray with one of her three 3-pointers that made it 62-49 for Northwest's largest lead of the game.

Alicia Bell, who began her career at Northwest, scored four quick points for the Griffons and Lauren Nolke sank a trey to make it 62-56. Bell finished with 13 points. Nolke made another three to cut the deficit to five, 64-59, with nine minutes to go.

Brenna Saline led Missouri Western with 17 points and converted a three-point play with 51 seconds remaining that made it 76-73. Northwest scored the final five points of the game from the foul line to seal the win.

Curtis led all scorers with 22 points and has averaged 20 points in her last three games. Jessica Koch had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Griffons (7-4, 4-3).
