Bearcats Hang On Against William Jewell

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Gabby Curtis, Shelly Martin and Kyla Roehrig each scored a game-high 20 points to lead Northwest to a 83-68 victory Saturday night over William Jewell in the second night of the Winstead-Reeves Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State.

Curtis hit 8-of-11 shots from the floor including four three-pointers on the way to being named the classic's Most Valuable Player. Curtis was named the MVP of last year's classic as well. Martin hit three from beyond the arc and added four assists and four steals in the win. Roehrig finished just a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Roehrig also had two blocks and three assists as she was named to the all-classic team for the Bearcats who improved to 3-0 on the season.

Abby Henry added 11 points for the Bearcats to go along with a game-high six assists and she also added six boards in the game. Both teams were pretty even shooting the ball, with William Jewell hitting 52 percent and Northwest hitting 50 percent of its shots. The Cardinals hit seven three-pointers while Northwest had eight. The Bearcats also hit four more free-throws than William Jewell. Northwest also forced 22 turnovers while committing 17 of its own.

Curtis scored Northwest's first seven points in the game. William Jewell jumped out to a 13-7 lead with 11:44 left before the Bearcats went on a, 8-0 run to go ahead 15-13. After Jewell took a 20-19 lead with 6:16 remaining, Northwest went on a 7-0 run and didn't trail the rest of the way.

The closest William Jewell got in the second half was with 5:18 remaining when they cut the Northwest lead to 67-65 until Curtis hit back-to-back three balls to give the Bearcats a comfortable cushion. Northwest would also close out the game on a 16-3 run.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 27 when they host Peru State, tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
