Women's basketball signs four

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State head women's basketball coach Gene Steinmeyer has announced the signing of four high school players to a national letter of intent to compete for the Bearcats next season.

The signees include Denise McEnaney, a 5-8 guard from Tarkio, Mo., Maggie Marnin, a 6-4 post player from Stuart, Iowa, Annie Mathews, a 5-11 forward from Bellevue, Neb., and Ashleigh Nelson, a 5-7 guard from Omaha, Neb.

McEnaney averaged 20 points and eight rebounds per game to earn all-district honors for Tarkio High School last season and has scored more than 1,000 points in three years.

"Denise is athletic and has the ability to score and rebound," said Steinmeyer. "She will be the premier player in the area this winter."

Marnin was a first-team all-state selection at West Central Valley Community School after averaging 21.5 points and 14.7 rebounds per game. She also averaged 5.4 blocks and 4.5 steals.

"Maggie is a gifted post player who can be very dominant in the front court," said Steinmeyer

Mathews was an honorable mention all-state choice at Bellevue East High School a year ago. She averaged a double-double on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds per contest.

"Annie is a physical player who is tough enough to play inside and versatile enough to play outside," said Steinmeyer. "She is a great rebounder along with all of her offensive abilities."

Nelson averaged seven points and shot 43 percent from three-point range for Millard West High School last season. She added 3.4 rebounds per contest.

"Ashleigh is a great three-point shooter," said Steinmeyer. "She was a junior starter on a highly-ranked team loaded with seniors. She had six three-pointers in the first round of the state tournament a year ago and will be a great asset to our backcourt."

Steinmeyer and his 2010-11 Bearcat team open their season at 7 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney Monday at Bearcat Arena.
