Bearcats Picked to Finish Fourth, Sixth in MIAA

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its preseason women's basketball polls today as part of its Virtual Media Day. Northwest Missouri State was selected to finish fourth in the league by the conference's coaches and sixth by the media.
2010 MIAA regular season champion Washburn was picked to finish first by the coaches earning four first-place votes. Defending National Champion Emporia State is tabbed to finish second in the league, but received five first-place votes. Central Missouri was picked to finish above Northwest at No. 3 with two first-place votes. The Bearcats also received a first-place vote in the poll.
In the media poll, Emporia State and Washburn tied for the top spot as the Hornets earned five first-place votes with Washburn getting nine. Central Missouri got a first-place vote of their own, Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Northwest received a first-place vote of its own by the media.
Northwest returns all five of its starters from last year's squad including All-MIAA performers Gentry Dietz and Abby Henry.
Dietz earned a first-team selection last season and was fourth in the league in scoring (15.5) and led the MIAA in rebounds (8.4) and blocks (2.0). Dietz was also third in the conference in field goal percentage shooting nearly 46 percent from the floor. Henry was a second-team honoree who led Northwest, and was third in the MIAA in scoring at 16.6 points per game a year ago. Henry was also seventh in the conference in field goal percentage (39 percent) and assists (3.3) per game. Henry's 81 percent free-throw shooting was fourth in the MIAA.
The Bearcats are coached by Gene Steinmeyer who will enter his 12th season with Northwest. Steinmeyer is 154-160 at Northwest and has a career record of 514-302 (.630).
