Nelson Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach
MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State head women’s basketball coach Gene Steinmeyer has announced the hiring of Meghan Nelson to the position of assistant women’s basketball coach. Nelson succeeds Lori Hopkins, who resigned to become Northwest’s Senior Women’s Administrator and Compliance Officer. Nelson’s duties will begin August 1.
Nelson has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach under Travis Traphagen at the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota. Together, they led the Cougars to back-to-back 18-win seasons. At the same time, Nelson earned her master’s degree in business administration.
Prior to Sioux Falls, Nelson attended Southwest Minnesota State University where she completed a five-year playing and coaching career. Nelson played two seasons for the Mustangs before transitioning to the coaching staff. As a student assistant, Nelson coached fundamentals and position work, helped with recruiting and coordinated summer camps.
“Meghan will be a great recruiter for Northwest even before she steps on campus,” said Steinmeyer. “She is a great people-person and has already developed an outstanding rapport with our players.
“With all our players returning this season, it was important to hire an individual that could motivate and relate to the players. We will miss coach Hopkins, but she will be down the hall and Meghan should do a great job of stepping into the position.”
Nelson is a fixture in the Christian community. As a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Sioux Falls, she prepared and delivered speeches for weekly gatherings and served as a counselor for various FCA sports camps.
Nelson earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance from SMSU. She is a native of Thief River Falls, Minn.
